Honoring the Past…

First fish

I caught my first fish from the bow of my Great Uncle Dick’s 14-foot aluminum boat. It was May of 1986, and I was 4 years old. The fish was a bluegill with a bright yellow breast and iridescent scales, sparkling in the late summer sun of Northern Michigan. Ever since that day 40 years ago, fishing has been in my blood. Murray Guides was established in 2026 to continue the legacy my Uncle passed on to me.

After moving to Denver in 2010, my friend Steve introduced me to fly fishing, and I jumped in with both feet. Starting out, I was self-taught, and the first few years were fraught with frustration and a few fish here and there.

In 2015, I attended a 2 day fly fishing clinic with a local Denver outfitter. I had one classroom day, and one day on the river. The class completely changed how I approached the water, and I started catching more fish. Proper education was the missing piece!
